Fairmont to run new luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Canada-based Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is set to manage a newly-built Dh800-million luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi when it opens on October 1, a Fairmont source close to the developments told Gulf News on Sunday.

"It's a 5-star property, owned by the Al Fahim Group unit Rmal Hospitality," the source said.

Fairmont was drawn to the project as it seeks to establish a presence in one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in the Middle East, the source added.

The hotel, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, located close to Abu Dhabi International Airport will have 369 guest rooms, a variety of world-class restaurants and more than 2,500 square metres of functional space, Fairmont said in a statement. Other facilities include a private beach for guests, two outdoor swimming pools, a fitness centre and a spa, it added.

Room tariffs start at Dh1,099 and go up to Dh5,249 a night, said the source, adding that customers will have to pay a 6 per cent tourism fee and a 10 per cent service charge on the applicable room tariff. The tourism fee and service charges are standard for all hotel rooms and suites in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is aiming to have more than 26,000 hotel rooms by 2012 as business tourism is a key focus of its tourism strategy. It currently has about 12,000 hotel rooms. Tourism has been identified as a high potential economic driver and its promotion is being led by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA). The authority has a five-year strategic plan under which it hopes to attract 2.7 million hotel guests a year by 2012. Abu Dhabi is expecting some 1.5 million hotel guests in 2009, despite the global recession.

Separately, the Fairmont source said the company will also be managing the Fairmont Nile City in Cairo from next month, when the property opens. Also, it will manage the Fairmont Palm Jumeirah in Dubai when the property opens in late 2010.

Fairmont also plans to manage the Fairmont Mina Al Fajer in Fujairah from 2011 when it opens, the source added.

Fairmont, owned by Fairmont Raffles Hotels International, a major global hotel company with 91 hotels worldwide, currently manages the Fairmont Dubai. The company also manages Fairmont and Raffles branded residences, estates and luxury private residence club properties.
