Bab Al Shams GM bags top trophy at Hotelier Awards

Hospitality stalwart Abdin Nasralla from Jumeirah Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa has been named General Manager of the Year at the Hotelier Middle East Award 2009.

Nasralla, who narrowly missed out on winning the award last year, said it "meant very much" to finally take the trophy home to the resort he opened back in 2004.

"Receiving the award is like a birthday gift as I turn 60 this week," said Nasralla, following the announcement of his new title at the Awards ceremony held at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai yesterday evening.

"This is the second award in my life and it's thanks to my staff. I'm going to continue — despite my age. I'm very proud," he added.

Nasralla won the award against tough competition from other highly respected general managers.

Also in the running were: Moritz Klein from Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi, Tom Meyer from InterContinental Hotels Groups properties Dubai Festival City, Andreas Flückiger from Radisson Blu Hotel Dubai Deira Creek and Adrian Rudin from Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri Abu Dhabi.

Tom Meyer and Andreas Flückiger were named the Highly Commended GMs and the judges gave a special mention to Tom Meyer, who was a very close second for this award.

The judges said that Nasralla eventually clinched the title as a result of his continued achievements over a lifetime dedicated to the hospitality industry in Dubai.

From prioritising service recovery to guests – including making a personal visit to a disgruntled travel operator in Taiwan while on holiday in Japan – to protecting the desert and advising on festivals such as Dubai Summer Surprises, they concluded that this general manager is not only a classic hotelier but one committed to offering a true example of Arabian hospitality.

Nasralla started his career as a chef and established himself in the F&B arena in the UAE during a 20-year career with Jebel Ali Gofl Resort & Spa, which culminated in the role of resident manager.

In 1999, he took on a similar position at Oberoi –MENA House in Cairo but returned to the UAE in 2000, tasked with setting up Jumeirah Hospitality. He then took up the role of general manager at the World Trade Centre Hotel, Dubai, managed by Jumeirah.

In 2004, Nasralla opened Jumeirah Bab Al Sahms Desert Resort & Spa and he has been at the helm of the property ever since.
