UAE spas fined for misleading ads

The UAE’s spa industry is reeling following a spate of advertising violations issued by the Ministry of Health (MoH).

"Many, many, many spas have been fined," head of advertising licensing at the MoH Dr Jameela Salman told Leisure Manager, estimating that at least 10 operations have been penalised since February.

Aimed at curbing misleading claims in medical advertisements, the violations have shocked those who had no previous knowledge they were contravening regulations.

"We found out when we got the first threat," said Wellness LIG Spa owner Basaam Saab. "They sent us a fax saying that we hadn’t got permission for our advertisements."

Hilton Dubai Jumeirah and Hilton Dubai Creek public relations manager Sana Khan said she found out about the regulations from an industry meeting her spa manager had attended.

"Everybody’s started to get concerned about this," she said.

"I don’t know whether to contact Dubai Municipality or the MoH. We’re basically waiting for a memo from them, to give us some kind of understanding."
